Most Popular Platforms Social Media in APAC in 2025

What are the most popular social media in APAC?

The Asia Pacific region boasts a staggering 2.5 billion social media users, surpassing any other region globally. With a remarkable 97.3% of the population accessing social media, and an astonishing 97%+ of those users doing so via mobile devices, the region presents an unprecedented business opportunity.

This mobile-first landscape, coupled with increasing internet penetration in rural areas, ensures continued growth in this dynamic market. Key players like China, India, and Indonesia contribute significantly to this massive user base.

Facebook and X are well-known in some countries, but other popular platforms are unknown in the West. APAC covers a vast region, so the most popular platforms vary significantly between countries.

This blog explores the most popular social media platforms in China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, and the Philippines.

China

Many leading Western platforms, such as Facebook, YouTube, and X, are banned in China. The social media landscape in this country looks significantly different.

Douyin, also known as Chinese TikTok, reigns supreme as the most popular social media app among China’s youth. Launched in 2016 by ByteDance, Douyin experienced a meteoric rise, amassing 2 billion mobile downloads globally by 2020.

Initially captivating users with its innovative short-video creation and sharing features, Douyin has evolved significantly. The platform now integrates live streaming options and robust e-commerce tools, empowering businesses to enhance local visibility and drive sales conversions.

This growth extends beyond younger demographics, with nearly half of its 755 million monthly active users now comprising Chinese Millennials. Douyin’s impact extends beyond social media, solidifying its position as a major player in the Chinese e-commerce scene. During last year’s 11.11 shopping festival, it emerged as the second-most popular shopping platform, attracting over 480 million Chinese consumers.
